The Day Wear Many Go Green (one way or another)

St Patricks day is coming. Next tuesday to be exact and I'm sure that green will be seen everywhere. (well almost everywhere, there are probably some green things that wont need to be seen that day) Green shirts, pants, hats, shoes, jewelry, shades, socks, underwear, buttons, pins, hair, skin, martians (maybe little green men from another planet might like to take part. Hey, ya never know. Moving on....) A day when many who are or arent irish claim to be so. Hey, whatever floats their proverbial boat! A day of traditional Irish fare and of course beer. A pint of guiness will cure what ales ya for the day. But there is also the green beer. Now I'm all for eating green on ST Patricks day. Have a pickle, some lettuce, cukes, zukes, green ice cream, a green popsicle, even some guac or pistascio pudding but dont green the beer. If you can't do the green on the outside, go ahead and do the green on the inside but please dont green the beer. If that's what floats you boat by all means have at it and knock yourself out but dont green mine thanks! Have a margarita, some lime ade, a green lollipop even some jalapenos and get down with your green loving self... The options are endless (where are those shamrock shakes these days) Hey, you could just do something green that day. Use less electricity, or use your reusable bags at the store or even come see me and by a hybrid car (really, it's a great idea! ) Have yourself a little party, you know a celebration of the day. Just don't let it get too out of hand. Probably time to cut everyone off if it starts to look like this...

You could just turn yourself into a frog for the day, eat some green jelly beans or M&M's maybe get naked and roll around in a field of clover (still a little bit chilly for this one, but hey the stains from the clover will keep you green for days) So what do you have planned for St Patricks day? Are you doing anything at all. Kinda takes over two weekends since it's on a tuesday so you have plenty of time. (prediction, sick and or vacation days to be used on wednesday will be on the high side this year) No matter what you choose to do just remember to be careful and to have a happy st patricks day unless you're a jerk.

Stop acting like a typical American rube. I have no doubt that on Tuesday I will not see people wearing stupid green hats, drinking green beer or putting up little leprechauns. While legend has Patrik chasing out the snakes, he brought Christianity to the Emerald Isle. Leprechauns are from Irish folk tales that predate Patrik and as a good pious Christian he would have abhorred all the drinking and pagan symbols. Also they certainty will not be eating the crap that masquerades as ?Irish Food? in America. My mouth is already tasting a big plate of hardwood smoked salmon with capers and red onion with brown soda bread and Irish butter on the side.

What I will see on Tuesday is some very pissed off Irish people. Paddy?s day is a national holiday where everyone spends the day at a pub drinking naturally colored beer. My project schedule (dictated by the client) will not allow the time off so I will be forcing some very unhappy lads and lassies to work on their day off. But turnabout is fair play as I had to work last Thanksgiving.

And as far as Guinness goes once you drink it here, there is nowhere else that you want to drink it. There is a very good change that the Guinness you will be drinking was made in Africa. Guinness does not export beer, they export a beer syrup that gets mixed with the local water at the bottling company. There is a big plant in Nigeria.

I don't green the beer LOL! Did take mom out for a belated birthday dinner thursday night at one of the local "irish Pubs" then hit the fountain square St Patricks day soiree friday night. A few guinness here and there and a little Irish fare to get in the spirit of things. Didn't hit the parade this year, had to work.

What do you consider Irish fare, Greg? Seriously. I ask because I just reviewed some menus from "Irish" pubs here in the area, and the fare is not what is offered in Ireland.

For instance, Jack Quinn's offers a shrimp dip. Ireland doesn't have shrimp. Prawns, yes, but no shrimp. And the prawns are not battered and deep fried. Nor do the Irish eat Pacific Northwest salmon. And unless I missed it, there is not a fish pie to be had, nor a daily roast. Where is the lamb?! Where is the grilled salmon with horseradish sauce?

I'm pretty sure that everyone can tell the difference between Cincinnati and Ireland. LOL!
No one would ever mistake one for the other So... It may not be truly what they dine on in Ireland but it's a slightly americanized variation. Fish and chips, sheppards pie, they had lamb stew and salmon as options downtown as well as corned beef and cabbage, bangers and mash (almost went for that thursday but I felt like fish and chips with some malt vinegar.) and of course a couple pints! Sure they all have other options that may not be "irish" on their menus but they do have to appeal to as much of the public as possible!

Interesting.

The only fish and chips I saw on offer was in Dublin, but no malt vinegar; tarter sauce only. No shepherds pie, no bangers and mash and the salmon there is completely different. There is no corned beef and cabbage, but bacon (rashers) and cabbage is fairly popular, served with a parsley sauce.
